Autistic Meltdown Definition

Autistic Meltdowns are intense responses to overwhelming situations, where an autistic individual might lose control over their behavior.

This can include crying, yelling, or physical aggression towards themselves or others. Meltdowns are not tantrums but are instead involuntary reactions to excessive stress, sensory overload, or emotional overwhelm.

They differ from person to person and are a sign that the individual is struggling to deal with their current environment or situation. Meltdowns are a result of the build-up of stress and not being able to communicate needs or escape the distressing situation.
